Gastric Bypass Surgery
Los Angeles

The USC Metabolic Bariatric Surgery Program team offers gastric bypass surgery to patients in the Los Angeles area. By making the stomach feel smaller through surgery, patients lose weight by feeling more satisfied with less food. Losing weight potentially helps to lower high blood pressure, improve or resolve type 2 diabetes, helps improve cholesterol health, and can even help to lower the risk of cancer, such as colon, breast, and kidney cancer.

USC Metabolic Bariatric Surgery Program team members are world authorities in all laparoscopic approaches for weight loss surgery, including hand sewn laparoscopic Roux en Y Gastric Bypass, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, and the Lap Band. They also specialize in the laparoscopic revision of lap band in patients who failed this procedures. Their current research includes virtual reality in laparoscopic surgery, minimally invasive approaches to bariatric surgery, single port laparoscopic surgery, and research in the physiology of laparoscopic surgery and biologic sealants.

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery uses a combination of restriction and malabsorption. During the procedure, the surgeon creates a smaller stomach pouch. The surgeon then attaches a Y-shaped section of the small intestine directly to the pouch. This allows food to bypass a large portion of the small intestine, which absorbs calories and nutrients. Having the smaller stomach pouch causes patients to feel fuller sooner and eat less food; bypassing a portion of the small intestine means the patient s body absorbs fewer calories.

  • helps resolve stress urinary incontinence
  • with women, helps resolve symptoms of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and helps improve reproductive health, restoring ovulation and fertility

Note that gastric bypass surgery is not a quick fix. It’s an ongoing journey that includes lifestyle changes, including a diet and exercise program that is recommended by the bariatric program coordinator. Ongoing support after surgery is important, and joining a support group helps achieve the greatest level of success for patients through motivation, celebrating small victories, and providing perspective.
